One of the most magical moments of our International Summer School is always the trip to Edinburgh, and for our Harry Potter fans, it’s a dream come true! Students get to explore the real-life places that inspired J.K. Rowling while she was writing the famous books right here in Scotland’s capital.
We start by wandering through Victoria Street, a beautiful curved street lined with colourful shops and cobblestone charm. Many fans believe this street inspired Diagon Alley, the magical shopping street where wizards buy their school supplies. The resemblance is easy to see - narrow, winding lanes, quirky shop fronts, and a sense of hidden wonder around every corner.
Another highlight is visiting The Elephant House, the cosy café where J.K. Rowling wrote parts of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. From her table overlooking Edinburgh Castle, she imagined Hogwarts and the spellbinding world that would soon captivate millions. Outside, a plaque marks this special connection, and it’s one of the most photographed spots of the trip.
We also pass by Greyfriars Kirkyard, a historic cemetery just behind the café, where fans can find gravestones with familiar names like McGonagall and Tom Riddle — real-life names that inspired characters in the books! And of course, students love spotting Edinburgh Castle, which many believe influenced Rowling’s image of Hogwarts itself.
Before heading back to Stirling, we make one last magical stop at Edinburgh City Chambers, where students can see J.K. Rowling’s handprints immortalised in bronze on the courtyard floor — a special tribute to her achievement as one of Scotland’s most celebrated writers. It’s a perfect photo opportunity and a reminder that the magic of imagination truly began here.
For many of our students, especially the biggest Potter fans, this day is one of the highlights of their summer. They return to Stirling with souvenirs, stories, and a bit of extra English “magic” too!
